To assist with mechanical services in support of research and teaching

• To assist with the set up and preparation of laboratory classes and teaching

• The manufacture, fabrication and repair of bespoke equipment

• To assist with the design, construction, assembly and installation of specialist apparatus used in

the hydro- mechanical and thermal testing of soil samples. This could include servo drives,

hydraulic and pneumatic pressure- control systems, as well as its associated transducers and

data- logging facilities

• To work closely with the Laboratory Manager and technical staff in the Department’s Geotechnical

Engineering laboratory under the general supervision of the Technical Services Manager

• To provide support to staff and students in the testing of geo- materials

• To partake in discussion with technical, academic staff and researchers to establish a basic

understanding of geotechnical laboratory and field- testing equipment

• To undertake manual and CNC machining, including the safe use of hand- powered equipment.

• To work on site from time to time, as required for example for soil sampling, or in- situ testing and

monitoring

• To keep the laboratory work area organised, clean and tidy

• To work in other departmental laboratory and teaching areas as required

• To be conversant with the safe use of equipment and materials and to have a practical

understanding of health and safety regulations and their application

• To maintain and record relevant associated laboratory safety data information

To attend appropriate training courses as needed and directed

• To operate within the guidelines, procedures and regulations in the department
